It is worth mentioning that a tonnage survey has nothing to do with how much the vessel actually weighs. It is a series of measurements used to calculate the volume of the vessel based on the length times the breadth and the depth.
Upon completion of the survey a tonnage certificate will be issued, and a copy will be held by the UK ship registry.
There are several reasons for having a tonnage survey:
If you wish to use the boat as security against a marine mortgage
To prove you actually own the boat
Register it as a pleasure vessel
Prove the boats nationality
Obtain transcripts of the registry to ensure there is no outstanding finance against it.
