Plymouth has been a major naval and commercial port for hundreds of years, and Plymouth has also more recently become very popular with the leisure/yachting industry. Plymouth boasts five marinas with access to many facilities including sailing clubs, sailing schools, yacht riggers and boat yards.

It is said that Salcombe Harbour is one of the most beautiful sailing and fishing centres in the world. Because of its location Salcombe Harbour offers safe haven to visiting yachts. Yachts and small craft moorings are concentrated into certain dedicated areas. There are no commercial vessels operating within Salcombe Harbour apart from the sizable local shellfishing fleet. Salcombe is a very popular stopover for boats cruising the west country and as a venue for a variety of sailing regattas in the summer months.

Dartmouth is defined by its Naval History and Dart Harbour is known to be one of the finest natural harbours in the UK. While the Dart is a busy port for local fishing vessels and naval shipping, it also makes an ideal and attractive stopover for smaller cruise ships and a wide variety of private luxury yachts.

Dartmouth is accessible at any state of tide, in most weather conditions, at any time of day or night. Dart Harbour has approximately 1,400 permanent moorings and 200 visitors’ moorings and has several marinas, including Darthaven, Dart Marina and Noss Marina. Near the head of navigation of the River Dart is the town of Totnes, where Baltic Wharf has boat storage and lifting facilities up to 16 tonnes.

Brixham harbour is the southernmost harbour in Torbay, and has a substantial inshore fishing fleet, plus Brixham marina. Torquay Harbour lies on the North shore of Tor Bay and despite a high proportion of activities revolving around the leisure industry, Torquay still remains a fully commercial and busy little port. The outer harbour shelters both the Town Dock and a 440-berth Marina (MDL) from the prevailing South Westerly winds. Torquay has an enclosed inner harbour which is highly protected from bad weather. It has visitor pontoons and approximately 170 moorings. Cranage facilities for a marine survey can be supplied by Torbay Seaways. Marine surveyors – Exmouth/ Teignmouth, Devon
Although Teignmouth, Exmouth and the River Exe up to Exeter contain a substantial number of yachts and small fishing craft, there are limited lift out facilities for survey, particularly for larger craft. Trouts Boatyard and the Retreat Boatyard on the Exe do offer lift-outs for surveys.

On the North Devon coast are harbours at Clovelly, Bideford, Appledore and Instow on the River Taw, with substantial numbers of drying moorings. Further east are the drying harbours of Ilfracombe, and Watermouth Cove. Haul out facilities in this area are however limited, but Marine Techniques will be happy to assist in arranging cranage and storage for any boat requiring a marine survey.
